
The industry-leading competition has celebrated the best wines in first and business class since 1985. This year's competition was particularly strong, with 32 airlines entering - the largest number of carriers since preCovid. The winners were revealed at a glittering ceremony at ME London, supported by Whispering Angel, Viña Concha y Toro Family of Wineries, The Pickle House and Golden Egg Vodka.
TIME FOR TASTING
As always, the awards are judged by a panel of experts this year comprising Charles Metcalfe (head judge), Masters of Wine Peter McCombie and Sam Caporn, and winemaker John Worontschak.
We joined the judges at Haberdashers' Hall in London's Smithfield as they put the barrels to the test, sampling 256 bottles. For each flight, a series of serious sips and scribbles were followed by lively discussion regarding the wine profile and suitability at 35,000 feet.
To stop unconscious bias from diluting the results pool, the judges take part in a blind tasting. Bottles are concealed in thick black bags and only revealed once the scores are recorded. Cue the occasional gasp, approving nod and cheeky re-pour to savour the flavour - this time, without a swirl in the spittoon.
