Research shows children and adolescents have some of the poorest diets - more than 65 per cent of the food they consume is ultra-processed, while busy schedules and the influence of social media can have a negative impact on food choices, too.

In his latest cookbook, Unprocess Your Family Life, award-winning registered nutritionist Rob Hobson addresses common challenges faced by families, such as dealing with different diets and how to make quick and healthy meals on a busy schedule. He also looks at the weak spots in the day where convenience leads the charge - from rushed breakfasts to grab-and-go snacks - empowering the whole family to make healthier decisions.

Here, we've picked out our favourite fun, flavourful and nutritious recipes that the whole family will love.

CHICKEN AND BARLEY POT ROAST WITH CRÈME FRAÎCHE

Are you tired of the same old roast chicken? Then spice things up with a pot roast. Before you dive in, make sure you have a pot large enough to cook a whole chicken in. Cooking the chicken in stock creates a flavourful broth, perfect for cooking barley.

The veggies make this dish feel like cosy roast chicken in a bowl, plus there are endless ways to use leftover chicken throughout the week. Stirring in crÚme fraîche or yoghurt not only adds creaminess but also boosts the calcium in your diet a great bonus for teens.

Ingredients (Serves 4-6)

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

3 medium carrots, halved lengthways, cut into 2cm chunks

2 large leeks, trimmed and sliced

3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

Few sprigs of thyme

200g pearl barley

1.2L fresh chicken stock

1 x 2kg whole chicken

Handful of baby spinach (optional)

1 tsp English mustard

1 tbsp reduced-fat crÚme fraîche or Greek yoghurt

Juice of œ lemon

Sea salt
