Don't throw book at Liam for accident

WAS Liam Roberts reckless? Yes. Did he deserve a red card? Absolutely. But that doesn’t justify the rabid clamour to have the Millwall goalkeeper hung, drawn and quartered.

The challenge that flattened Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta in last week-end’s FA Cup defeat at Selhurst Park was ugly. There was blood, stitches and an ear left hanging by a thread.

Gruesome injuries prompt gut reactions, so Palace chairman Steve Parish can perhaps be forgiven for his hysterical reaction during a BBC interview at half-time, in which he told Roberts to take a “long, hard look at himself”.

But he was still wrong, as were the pundits who demanded additional sanctions and all the social media yappers who accused Roberts of premeditated thuggery. The FA, meanwhile, should be ashamed of themselves for jumping aboard the bandwagon and extending his ban to six games. Honestly, you’d think the 30-year-old had ended Mateta’s career, not accidentally kicked him in the ear.
