BY THE time Billy Kee realised he needed help, it was almost too late. Suffering with un- diagnosed anxiety and depression, the former Accrington Stanley striker contemplated suicide before taking a break from football and seeking help.
âI was low at the time,â he told the BBC in 2018. âYou start think- ing âWill I just drive my car into a wall?â.â
Just last season, Tot-tenhamâs Brazilian striker Richarlison admitted that seeing a psychologist had proba-bly saved his life in the wake of his participa-tion at the 2022 World Cup.
Yet for every Richarl-ison and Kee, there are hundreds more footbal-lers suffering in silence, repressed by societal stigma or the fear of professional rejection.
âThe only people you hear from are ones who have really, really start-ed to struggle and hit a crisis point,â explains Paul Galdas, professor of menâs health at the University of York.
âThe bigger problem is acknowledging men-tal health struggles ear-ly when people are just beginning to struggle.
