PM recommits to Ukraine joining Nato, despite US
KEIR Starmer says Ukraine cannot be locked out of talks on ending the war and remains on an "irreversible path" to Nato membership.
The Prime Minister added that Britain's support for the invaded nation is steadfast and will continue for as long as is necessary.
He made the assurances during a call with Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky. Starmer's intervention came after US President Donald Trump stunned world leaders by revealing he had started peace talks with Russia's president Vladimir Putin.
It sparked fears Kyiv would be frozen out of negotiations.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said this week that Ukraine's goal of joining Nato is not a realistic prospect, before rowing back after a major backlash.
Britain has been battling to keep the Trump administration on side but in an apparent split with Washington, Starmer gave his full backing to Ukraine joining Nato.
Descri# the PM's call with Zelensky, a Downing Street spokeswoman said: "The Prime Minister began by reiterating the UK's concrete support for Ukraine for as long as it's needed.
