
KEIR Starmer faces one of his toughest tests so far as he tries to convince Donald Trump that Ukraine needs US support to combat Russian aggression.
The PM is to warn the President today that Vladimir Putin will strike again if America does not provide a security "backstop" as part of any peace deal.
But he is up against an unhinged leader who has already blamed Ukraine for starting the war, falsely accused its President Volodymyr Zelensky of being a dictator, and demanded his country's rare minerals to pay for US aid.
And Mr Starmer's task was made harder last night after Mr Trump seemed to rule out playing a part in post-war protection for Ukraine. The PM is at the White House today for a crucial meeting with Mr Trump, as Europe's security hangs in the balance.
Speaking to reporters on the flight to Washington, Mr Starmer said: "The backstop is so important, that the security guarantee has to be sufficient to deter Putin from coming again.
