
Whether you're a seasoned rower or just a gym-goer who's always wanted to master the ergometer, Graham Benton, 17-times British Indoor Rowing Champion, has some advice for you.
"There's always room for improvement - and no matter what age you are, it's never too late to start rowing."
Benton is the embodiment of the weights room devotee who's become a rowing machine convert - and reaped some huge rewards on the back of it.
For many of us the ergometer - as the rowing machine is known among its fans - is little more than a useful tool for a warm-up or bit of cardio when the assault bike, elliptical trainer and treadmill are all in use by someone else.
That was the case for Graham Benton too. "I started indoor rowing back in 2002 with no prior experience, just a love for fitness. I'd get on the rowing machine after a weights session and got quite into it."
When Benton says he 'got quite into it' he's definitely understating his dedication.
Now 52, Benton has progressed from using a rowing machine in the gym at the end of a weights session to becoming a British, European and having a heart condition.
"I was diagnosed with ventricular tachycardia a few years ago and had to modify my training, especially in the beginning, to keep my heart rate within safe limits."
With medication and medical guidance Benton has managed to continue competing at the highest level - something he also puts down to a dedicated training regimen.
"I train daily, with a strong emphasis on listening to my body, especially as I get older. My routine used to be relentless, but now recovery is just as crucial. Nutrition-wise, I focus on lean proteins and vegetables but allow myself some indulgences. Keeping balance is key to staying motivated and fit over the long term."
