We spent a week roving through the Baviaanskloof and Addo Elephant National Park in the fifth generation Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland.

The latest Grand Cherokee was launched in America in 2022 and landed on home soil this May. South Africans can choose from three trim levels: the Limited, Overland, and Summit Reserve. All three are equipped with Jeep's 3.6 Pentastar V6 petrol engine, but sadly, the bonkers 5.7 Hemi V8, available in America, is not currently an option for us.

The Limited gets Jeep's Quadra-Trac all-wheel drive while the Overland and the flagship model get the superior QuadraTrack II four-wheel drive with low range gears.

It is strange that the Limited gets 18" rims while the Overland - which is supposed to be the better off-road vehicle of the three - and the Summit Reserve respectively get 20" and 21" rims... Off-road enthusiasts will know low-profile tyres don't do well on 4x4 routes.

So what's new?

Manufacturers tend to make every next-generation vehicle slightly larger than the previous one, and this is also the case with the Grand Cherokee. The grille is wider than before, and behind it hides a new radar checking the road ahead for dangers. The track width has also been widened by 36 mm to improve handling and the roof slopes slightly to streamline the bodywork.
