Born in the rainforest among the Indigenous Mundurucu people, Saru found work as a jungle guide for local lodges, though he longed to take visitors deeper into the Amazon of his childhood. So, in 2021, he founded Aracá Expeditions, the first and only Indigenous-run tour company in the Brazilian Amazon. It's dedicated to passing on his knowledge of the rainforest, while also providing sustainable opportunities for visitors to connect with its riverside communities.
What is the significance of the Amazon to its Indigenous people?
I was born along the Amazon River, and my people have lived here for over 8,000 years. As a young boy I learned from my father about wildlife behaviours: I could identify animal species by the noises they made, or the type of fish by the sound of its splash. From my grandmother and mother, I learned about the forest's medicinal plants, which we needed if we were ever sick. The Amazon is more than our home: it is a place we depend on for survival.
