As a rule, there are three types of steam cleaners to choose from – mops, convertible and cylinder machines. If you only want to clean floors, a steam mop is a simple-to-use device, making it a fab upgrade on a traditional mop. It will be light and easy to manoeuvre and you won’t have to store any extra tools. Convertible steam cleaners double as an upright steam mop that becomes a handheld cleaner when required. They also come with various tools for steam cleaning smaller areas. Finally, for the ultimate in powerful, long-lasting steam, there’s the cylinder cleaner. These generate a constant flow of steam that makes light work of anything, but take up a lot more storage space.

Adjustable steam settings allow you to control the intensity of the steam, meaning you can easily switch when moving from carpet to hard floor. The size of the water tank is also important, as a larger tank means longer cleaning sessions without having to refill. Most steam mops also come with accessories that can greatly increase the versatility of your steam mop or cleaner.’

Investing in a machine with extra tools will mean you can use it on a range of surfaces, as Josh explains. ‘Microfibre pads are great for picking up dirt, and are machine washable, while deep scrub# brushes are perfect for cleaning grout lines, corners, and other tough-to-reach areas. Carpet gliders attach to the head of the mop, allowing you to freshen up carpets, rugs, and upholstery.’
