JOHN MICHAEL KOHLER LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
KULBHUSHAN JAIN
There are architects who have changed the landscape of practice through their work and there are professors who shape the perspective of design for future generations. Kulbhushan Jain is one of the rare individuals who has done both. The renowned architect, urbanist and conservation consultant worked with Louis Kahn in his early years on seminal projects such as the Kimbell Art Museum and Dhaka Parliament building. He has worked on several architectural heritage projects including the ongoing work at the Mehrangarh and Amber Forts in Rajasthan. Prof Jain was also the Director of the School of Architecture at the CEPT University in Ahmedabad. Teaching at the Master's and Doctoral levels, he believes in an investigative approach to teaching and learning, valuing critique and dialogue in the design process.
ON WINNING THE AWARD âThe message from Kohler about the John Michael Kohler Lifetime Achievement Award came as a big surprise â indeed a very pleasant one. It reconfirmed my faith in Karma, in your work. Particularly more so when you have chosen some less-treaded paths in your life.â

THE WINNING PROJECT Do symbiotic relationships merely exist amongst plants? Subterranean ruins by A Threshold, a multifunctional public centre in Kaggalipura, Karnataka, is akin to an architectural entity housing flora, fauna and people. Amid a sea of entries, the unique scope of this project and the landscape treatment caught the jurors' eye. Exposed red brick masonry walls curve and slope with the land, housing a kindergarten, multiple community centres and exhibition spaces.
